One in five Americans has experienced mental or behavioral health issues, however, many are reluctant to seek help or don’t know where to turn for care. Unlike physical conditions, symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges can be difficult to see. Friends and family members may find it hard to know when and how to step in. As a result, those in need of mental health services often do not receive care until it is too late.

The Tolley Fire Department has recognized the critical need to provide this type of training in the region.  This groundbreaking skills-based course led by Certified MHFA Instructor, Calli Thorne, teaches people how to identify, understand and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health or substance use issues. Similar to physical first aid and CPR, Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a crisis until professional assistance is obtained or the crisis is resolved.  The goal of this training is to give first responders, health care workers, employers, teachers, parents, and caring individuals the tools and resources they need to assist anyone who may be experiencing mental health & substance use challenges in their communities.

Mental Health First Aiders will learn a 5-step Action Plan that guides them through the process of reaching out and offering appropriate support:

✔️Recognize common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges

✔️Recognize common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges

✔️Understand how to interact with a person in crisis

✔️Know how to connect a person with help

✔️Use self-care tools and techniques.

A grant thru the Kenmare Area Community Foundation was awarded to the Tolley Fire Department to assist with the cost of providing this program.  Pre-registration is required.  Class size is limited to 30 students.  Participants must be 18 years of age or older to attend.
